Count Binface Is Only Opponent to Farage’s By-Election

The by-election triggered by Nigel Farage’s resignation now looks set to be largely uncontested after Labour joined the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Restore Britain, to not field candidates. This leaves Count Binface as Farage’s only opponent.

Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, resigned as Clacton MP, and will run in the by-election to be held in August/September. A by-election occurs between general elections, and happens in a constituency where its MP has resigned or is unable to serve, voting for an empty seat to be filled.

Speaking after his resignation, Farage said he had considered leaving politics altogether and moving to the United States, but instead decided to seek a fresh mandate from voters. “The people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions.”

Kemi Badenoch, Conservative Leader, described Farage’s resignation as a “hissy fit” and will not stand a candidate in what she calls a “fake” by-election.

A Labour spokesperson said the party believed Farage was attempting to divert attention from the investigation and would also not take part.

Farage is under investigation by Parliament’s standards watchdog following scrutiny of a £5 million donation from businessman Christopher Harborne before he entered Parliament in 2024. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, insisting the money was a personal gift to help cover security costs.

Count Binface is a novelty candidate, meaning a candidate who does not expect to win their run for a seat in the House of Commons, but does so for satirical reasons or in protest. He describes himself as an “independent space warrior”, and has run for MP since 2019 for several constituencies.

“Make Your Vote Count” is Count Binface’s slogan which shows his intention to promote electoral participation, echoing reports of low turnouts in recent decades in local elections from The Electoral Commission.
