The Voice That Changed the Conversation
On Wednesday 17 June, The ADM Show welcomes one of the most compelling voices in African electronic music when South African poet, singer-songwriter and DJ Sio joins Ekiti Sound for a special guest appearance on The Beat London.

Few artists have left a deeper mark on the emotional landscape of South African house music.Few artists have left a deeper mark on the emotional landscape of South African house music.
While producers and DJs often dominate the spotlight, Sio has spent more than a decade proving that words can be just as powerful as the groove beneath them. Through a catalogue of deeply personal songs, she has helped expand the role of the vocalist in electronic music from featured guest to central storyteller.
Born and raised in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, Sio’s artistic journey began long before music entered the picture. Books, poetry and imagination became an escape from a childhood shaped by questions of identity, belonging and difference. Those experiences would later become the foundation of a songwriting style that feels intimate, fearless and disarmingly honest.
Listeners first discovered that gift through collaborations with some of South Africa’s most respected producers, including Luka and Julian Gomes, as well as UK house music pioneer Charles Webster. Yet what separated Sio from many vocalists was her ability to turn electronic music into something deeply human. Her songs didn’t simply complement the production. They carried their own weight.

That approach reached a defining moment with her acclaimed album Features.
At a time when vocalists are often positioned as supporting characters within dance music, Sio flipped the script. Instead of appearing as a featured artist on producers’ records, she invited producers to feature on hers. The project challenged long-standing assumptions about authorship and creative ownership within house music, while reinforcing her reputation as one of the genre’s most distinctive voices.
Her latest album, Sarang (사랑), marks another turning point.
Named after the Korean word for love, the project explores what happens when an artist intentionally creates from a place of joy rather than pain. The result is a body of work that remains deeply personal while embracing optimism, growth and possibility.
As Afro House and African electronic music continue to reach new audiences around the world, Sio remains one of the artists helping to ensure that the culture’s emotional depth isn’t lost amid its commercial rise.

Her appearance on The ADM Show promises a conversation that goes beyond music alone, touching on creativity, identity, vulnerability, spirituality and the experiences that continue to shape her work.
Join Ekiti Sound and Sio on Wednesday 17 June on The ADM Show, only on The Beat London.
