Nigel Farage Resigns as MP for Clacton and Calls for Change

Nigel Farage’s resignation triggers a by-election that he says he will contest as a challenge to what he describes as the political establishment.

Farage argued that the people of Clacton should decide his political future and framed the contest as an opportunity for voters to back Reform UK’s call for change.

The Reform UK leader said recent scrutiny surrounding allegations over undeclared donations, along with media attention involving his family, contributed to his decision to seek a fresh mandate from voters.

Nigel Farage is facing fresh calls for an Electoral Commission investigation over claims that financial support provided by associate George Cottrell between 2019 and 2024 was not properly declared.

The move comes as former Reform UK deputy leader Ben Habib and Labour continue to press the Electoral Commission to investigate claims relating to financial support allegedly provided between 2019 and 2024 by businessman George Cottrell, a convicted money launderer. Reform UK rejects the allegations and says Farage complied with all relevant rules.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed that reporting requirements can apply to political party members even if they are not elected MPs, and noted that Farage was also subject to rules during his time as a Member of the European Parliament.

Amidst allegations, Nigel Farage has accused parts of the media of compromising his family’s privacy after the publication of a photograph showing his daughter’s residence.

The Reform UK leader argued that his daughter has no involvement in politics and should not be subjected to scrutiny because of his public role. He said there was no public interest in identifying where she lives and criticised journalists for contacting members of his family. He argued that while politicians should expect scrutiny, relatives who play no part in public life should be left out of political controversies.

The by-election date has not yet been announced, but the contest is expected to become a major test of support for both Farage and Reform UK.
