Vybz Kartel, the Jamaican dancehall artist, has been released from prison after spending over 10 years behind bars for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. A London court recently ruled that the conviction was unsafe due to jury tampering.
In 2014, Kartel, along with several co-defendants, were found guilty after a 65-day trial, one of the longest in Jamaica’s legal history. He was initially sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 35 years, which was later reduced to 32 and a half years.
Last month, Kartel and his co-defendants made their final appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, arguing that the trial judge mishandled allegations of jury tampering. It was claimed that a juror had offered J$500,000 (£2,500; $3,200) to others for not guilty verdicts. The appeals court ruled in their favor, with Lord Lloyd-Jones stating that the judge’s failure to address the bribery issue compromised the integrity of the convictions. As a result, Kartel and his co-defendants will not face a retrial.
