Yesterday marked another milestone moment in the global Afrobeats movement as music industry leaders Universal Music Group (UMG) secured a majority stake in Mavin Global, the pioneering Nigerian music company founded by Don Jazzy in 2012.

Mavin, which is home to major artists like Rema (photographed above) and Ayra Starr, has been integral to the ascension of Afrobeats both within Nigeria and globally.

According to a press release by UMG yesterday, the partnership will “accelerate Mavin’s strategic advancement and create more opportunities to break more talent globally, expand the reach of its existing roster and continue building its business into a super-serving, pan-African entertainment company.”

Considering the well-documented success of Mavin in uplifting rising Afrobeats artists starting long before to the UMG takeover, it’s incredible to imagine what will be made possible with the additional resources provided through this new partnership.
