Wednesday afternoon’s Super Bowl victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs descended into chaos and tragedy as at least one individual lost their life and 21 others, including several children, sustained injuries in a shooting incident. The authorities in Kansas City, Missouri, reported that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the shooting, which occurred near Union Station as the festivities drew to a close
Eleven children, nine of whom sustained gunshot wounds, are currently receiving medical care at Children’s Mercy Kansas City following the tragic incident. Stephanie Meyer, the hospital’s senior vice-president, provided an update on Wednesday evening, assuring that all the children are anticipated to make a full recovery from their injuries. The minors under the hospital’s care range in age from six to fifteen. Additionally, an adult, who is a parent of one of the children, is also receiving treatment at the facility.
President Joe Biden issued a statement calling for immediate action on gun control measures, expressing deep concern over the tragic attack during a Super Bowl parade, which he described as piercing the core of the American spirit. “These events should stir us, shock us, and compel us to act. What are we waiting for? What more evidence do we need? How many more families must suffer?” Biden stated. The president urged the public to voice their demands in Congress for legislation to prohibit assault weapons, restrict high-capacity magazines, and enhance background checks.
It remained unclear whether the shooting incident coincided with the parade, which saw the participation of the Super Bowl champions, along with Mike Parson and Laura Kelly, the governors of Missouri and Kansas respectively. However, as gunfire erupted, hundreds of individuals who had gathered to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday scrambled for cover. Video footage depicted a chaotic scene near Union Station as law enforcement and emergency responders swiftly guided people to safety. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing experiences, describing their frantic escape from the gunfire. A high school student recounted to the Kansas City Star how he sustained injuries while fleeing from the sound of gunfire.
No one has been charged as of yet.
