The Artist Rights Alliance advocacy group issued an open letter yesterday calling out the threat of artificial intelligence in mimicking the appearances, voices, and sound of human artists.
The open letter was signed by over 200 high-profile musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Nicki Minaj, and J Balvin, and the estates of Frank Sinatra and Bob Marley.
Artificial intelligence poses a serious threat to both the talent and autonomy of artists in the music industry, with the rapidly developing technology capable of producing increasingly accurate recreations of artist voices and performances.
Artists have long been outspoken about the threat of AI in the music industry, and the “Elvis Act”, which goes into effect on July 1st in the American state of Tennessee, will make it illegal to replicate an artist’s voice without their consent.
You can expect more legislation to be passed as the technology continues to grow in its capacities.
