Real Madrid boycotted the awards ceremony last night as Rodri beat out Vinicius Junior to win the most prestigious award in football.
Rodri created history last night as he became the first Manchester City footballer, and the first Spaniard in 64 years, to win the Ballon d’Or. The prestigious award, presented by France Football, was created as a way to recognise the very best footballer on the planet in the men’s game. Yesterday’s event was the 68th annual ceremony, and topped off a year that saw Rodri lose only one game for club and country, going on to win Euro 2024 with Spain, an historic fourth Premier League title with Man City, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The defensive-midfielder beat out tough competition in Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham, who came second and third respectively. The more than deserved winner had a spectacular year, playing in a position that has become notoriously overlooked in football, where he has become the backbone for the Premier League’s best team.
Real Madrid, convinced that they were hard done by, decided to boycott the award ceremony in a misguided show of solidarity with Vinicius, who they believe should have won the award. Madrid went on to win club of the year, however no one was there to accept the award. Rodri clutched the Golden Ball whilst on crutches, and in a truly humble speech, dedicated the award to his teammates. He specifically mentioned his international compatriots, Xavi and Iniesta, who many feel should have won the award in their respective illustrious careers.
