Familiar foes

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have delivered time and again in years past.

That didn’t change in last night’s first leg of the first semi-final of this season’s Champions League.

A game which ended in a 2-2 draw has set this tie up for a blockbuster second leg next week.

Check out our article from a couple weeks back if you want to read about how both sides reached the semi-final.

A tale of two halves, just about

Bayern Munich were on top of Real Madrid from the offset, looking the far more likely of the two sides to open the scoring.

In typical Real fashion though, it was them who took the lead on 24 minutes.

Toni Kroos played an incisive through ball to find Vinicius Jr. who had all the time in the world to find his feet, having outsmarted Kim Min-Jae.

Manuel Neuer was late to come off his line, and the Brazilian superstar finished cooly past the German keeper.

A rapid Bayern response

Bayern Munich started the second half on fire when Leroy Sané equalised for the home side just eight minutes after the restart.

He only had one thing on his mind upon receiving the ball out wide.

The German winger drove at Ferland Mendy before swiftly cutting in on his left foot and smashing the ball home with an emphatic near-post finish.

Bayern then took the lead only four minutes later.

Lucas Vásquez clumsily brought Jamal Musiala down in the box, and Harry Kane finished unerringly from the penalty spot.

Thomas Tuchel’s men were on their way to an important first leg victory until they shot themselves in the foot.

Kim, having already been caught out for the first goal, conceded a penalty in the dying minutes with a rash challenge of his own on Rodrygo.

Vinicius Jr. buried his penalty to seal a brace on the night, leaving it all to play for next week in Madrid.

Back to back German nights

Champions League football will stay in Germany tonight as Borussia Dortmund host Paris Saint-Germain tonight for the first leg of the second semi-final.

Tune in at 8pm to see what happens before the finalists are decided next week.
