“Supacell” follows a group of Black South Londoners whose superpowers are triggered by Sickle Cell Anaemia.

In an interview with presenter Midè Oni, who commended Rapman for the show’s educational moments, the creator explained the importance of featuring this theme, stating, “there is not enough light on [Sickle Cell]… you can walk into a room with 10 people and if 2 people know about Sickle Cell, you’ve done well.”

Since the show’s release, the creator has been lauded for addressing a range of issues faced by the Black community, including healthcare system biases and the prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) among individuals of African and Caribbean descent.

While Sickle Cell disease affects all races, Black people are at a higher risk of inheriting this genetic condition.

Rapman has ignited a vital conversation about SCD, with every episode prompting viewers to ask, “What is Sickle Cell?”

The show’s consistent focus on the genetic condition has raised awareness and encouraged deeper understanding among audiences.
