Luck catches up with Liverpool
Liverpool lost to Everton in the Merseyside Derby last night at Goodison Park, leaving their title credentials hanging by a thread.
Everton looked a determined side right from kick off, fully aware that they could stop their bitter rivals from eventually winning the league.
Despite creating a number of chances themselves, Liverpool were unable to capitalise and paid for it in the end.
The difference makers
Everton’s energetic start to the game had the visitors on the back foot, and it paid off.
In the 27th minute, the ball bounced around the Liverpool box before a scuffed Ibrahim Konate clearance fell to Jarrad Branthwaite.
He managed to get enough on his shot to squeeze it under a sprawling Alison, giving Everton a 1-0 lead.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin then doubled the lead from a corner kick in the second half with a low-driven header, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb.
They came close to halving the deficit with the game winding down through Luis Diaz, but his effort smashed the post.
Goodison Park erupted at full time, as Everton claimed all three points with a clean sheet in a 2-0 win.
A long time coming for the Toffees
Last night was the first time since 2010 that Everton beat Liverpool at Goodison Park.
It will make it even sweeter for their fans knowing that it was Jurgen Klopp’s last visit there, having announced that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
The loss has serious implications in the title race following Arsenal’s thumping of Chelsea yesterday.
Liverpool now sit three points behind Arsenal and one point ahead of Manchester City.
City, however, have two games in hand over both clubs.
If City are win both games, Liverpool will find themselves on the outside looking in.
The champions visit Brighton tonight, and all eyes will be on their performance.
If this season has told us anything, it’s that there’s likely another twist in the tale to unfold.
