Kendrick Lamar surprised fans on Friday with a surprise album drop, title ‘GNX’.
Fans were first teased on Friday evening with a snippet that Kendrick posted on his finsta account, Jojoruski, which they at first thought was just a snippet for a new track. The snippet, which was a minute long and captioned “GNX”, turned out to not only be the title of a new track, but also the title for the full 12 track LP that the rapper released about 30 minutes later.
The intro track, ‘wacced out murals’, appeared to take shots at the music industry, with Kendrick specifically mentioning artists like Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg, and the recent responses to Lamar being picked to perform for the Superbowl halftime show. Wayne’s response to the track on X, proclaiming “I shall destroy if disturbed”, has fans speculating if this is the start of a rap feud between the two, who have previously collaborated on the successful track ‘Mona Lisa’ for Wayne’s ‘Carter V’ album.
The album features collaborations from a slew of West-Coast independent artists, as well as two features from Kendrick’s former label mate SZA on the tracks ‘Luther’ and ‘Gloria’. The Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning artist’s last album was ‘Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers’ in 2022, and fans are now speculating if this LP is the rollout for another album.
