England to face off against Switzerland on Saturday
England was one minute away from elimination on Sunday before Jude Bellingham soared to the rescue.
His heroic overhead kick sent the Round of 16 game against Slovakia into extra time.
It then took Harry Kane less than a minute of extra time to score the winner, sending England into the quarter-finals.
They are now two game away from reaching back to back Euros finals.
A better performance needed to get past the Swiss
Bellingham’s overhead kick was the first shot on target that England managed in 95 minutes of football.
Kane’s winner in extra time was England’s second and final shot on target on the night.
For a team with such a wealth of talent, that’s simply not good enough.
With the quarter-final against Switzerland now three days away, Gareth Southgate needs to figure out his strongest starting eleven.
Granit Xhaka and Switzerland pose a serious threat
Switzerland enter the quarter-final having comfortably dealt with Italy 2-0 last Saturday.
The Swiss are led by Granit Xhaka, who has had yet another stellar tournament.
While the English squad has an overwhelmingly stronger team on paper, that quality has not translated on the pitch.
It may be taking things a step too far to call Switzerland favourites, but up until this point, they have looked far more like a team than their upcoming opponents.
Unless England manages to get its act together, their tournament is at threat of ending.
A clear path to the final
If England manage to get past Switzerland, they will face either Turkey or the Netherlands in the semi-final.
Despite underperforming up until this point, Southgate’s men have loads of experience in the knockout stages.
At this level, that matters almost as much as the quality of a side itself.
Roll on, Saturday.
