The singing and rapping songstress accepted the award for ‘Woman Of The Year’, presented by DJ Miss Milan and Jayda Love.
The artist of the moment, Doechii, was awarded ‘Woman Of The Year’ at the prestigious Billboard Women In Music Award ceremony which was held at the Youtube Theater at Hollywood Park on Saturday March 29th. The artist who took home the best rap album award at the Grammy’s earlier this year reflected on her ‘Rising Star’ win and performances of ‘Persuasive/Crazy’ back in 2023, exclaiming “I cannot believe it was just two years ago I stood on this stage right here and accepted the Billboard Rising Star Award.”
The “swamp princess”, real name Jaylah Hickmon quickly ascended into the limelight after the release of her mixtape ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’, which charted at #12 on the Billboard 200, and #3 on the UK Official Charts. It spawned the hit single “Denial Is A River” which was acclaimed by several music critics. She then went on to release ‘Anxiety’, originally recorded and released in 2019 on YouTube. The track heavily samples “Somebody That I Used To Know’ by Australian singer Gotye and has become a viral dance sensation on the popular social media platform, TikTok.
Furthermore, the 26-year-old Tampa native, did not hesitate to call out the music industry on its misogyny towards women, announcing the audience filled with majority female creatives “We are the innovators who are just as central to this industry as men.” She further went on to thank by name the “brilliant, savvy women” on her team that work alongside her.
Doechii shows no signs of slowing down her success and thanking the powerful women alongside her. We at The Beat London 103.6FM are very excited with Doechii’s continued success!
