Netflix docuseries has risen controversy as Egyptians feel as if the series has stripped the Egyptian identity. The producer of the series states that Cleopatras heritage is highly debated.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 69 BC, Cleopatra was the final ruler of a Greek-speaking dynasty that had been established by Macedonian general Ptolemy, an ally of Alexander the Great. Since Cleopatra’s mother’s identity is unknown, historians speculate that she or any other female ancestor may have been an Egyptian native or from another part of Africa.

The executive producer and narrator of the film, American actress Jada Pinkett Smith, was quoted as saying: “We don’t often get to see or hear stories about black queens, and that was really important for me, as well as for my daughter, and just for my community to be able to know those stories because there are tonnes of them!”
